Summary: Three new Career Technical Education (CTE) courses titled “CTE Law Enforcement Principles and Practices”, “CTE Crime Scene Investigation”, and “CTE Exploring the US Criminal Justice System” are being submitted. These are all year-long CTE courses. All three of these courses meet the UC/CSU A-G Requirement “G”.

“CTE Law Enforcement Principles and Practices” is designed to give students interested in a career in law enforcement an opportunity to learn about various aspects of police work and the career avenues available. Among units to be covered are patrol procedures, ethics, vehicle codes, communications systems, physical training, safety, narcotics, gang awareness, penal codes, criminal laws. This course covers the constitutional amendments important to rules of arrest and search and seizure.

“CTE Crime Scene Investigation” is designed to give students both theory and hands-on experience in the skills and knowledge in the field of forensic science, including an introduction to crime scene investigation, crime scene photography, and diagrams as they are used in a criminal investigation. Students will learn the importance of physical evidence in solving crimes, dusting and lifting fingerprints, how to perform a gunshot residue test, evidence collecting and processing methods, and the use of forensic light sources technology.

“CTE Exploring US Criminal Justice System” focuses on understanding the American legal system and its importance to American life as it pertains to criminal justice. Students learn the principles of the criminal justice field including a working knowledge of state and federal laws and various segments of the judicial system.

“CTE Crime Scene Investigation” is articulated with the equivalent Mt. San Jacinto College course, named Criminal Investigation/AJ108. The creation of these courses are necessary in order to continue the current articulation of our public services sector/public safety pathway.

“CTE Law Enforcement Principles and Practices”, “CTE Crime Scene Investigation”, and “CTE Exploring the US Criminal Justice System” have been approved by the Director of Curriculum and Instruction and the Assistant Superintendent of Educational Services.
