Summary: Newsela provides teachers with access to thousands of informational text articles, unit plans, and resources to promote literacy and improve reading comprehension for English Learners. The platform gives students full access to the library with each article offered at five different lexile levels. Teachers can monitor student progress with detail reports that show the number of articles students have read and their development in reading comprehension. The use of Newsela is supplemental and being proposed as an extra level of support to the core curriculum and is aligned with the purposes and goals of Title III regulations.
Funding: The cost for this item is included in the 2018-19 operating budget funded through Title III, not the General Fund.
Recommendation: It is recommended that the Board of Trustees approve the Agreement with Newsela for Supplemental Services to improve reading comprehension skills for English Learners.
