Summary: Over the past four years, District Administration has advocated for more professional development opportunities for our Classified and Confidential staff. As part of this support, Cabinet has determined that participation and membership within the two organizations that support the office professional, Riverside County Association of Educational Professionals (RCAEOP) and the California Association of Educational Office Professionals (CAEOP), are both opportunities for professional growth and development. As a result, the Executive Assistant and the Administrative Assistants within the District have taken on leadership roles with the District Secretaries, by providing them with professional development workshops at the quarterly District Secretary Meetings.

Many of our secretarial leaders have taken on responsibilities and roles in the two organizations (RCAEOP and CAEOP). In March 2017, Lori Ortell will be installed as President and Christine Harris as the Immediate Past President for the California Association of Educational Office Professionals (CAEOP) for the 2017-18 year.

When a CAEOP member is elected to the position of President Elect, there is a three-year commitment to the organization as President-Elect, President, and Immediate Past President. In all three positions, it is CAEOP’s expectation that the person(s) holding such be able to attend all Executive Board meetings, various affiliate meetings in other counties within California, and attend the National Association of Educational Office Professionals (NAEOP) annual conference in July. This year’s conference is being held in Greenville, South Carolina, July 11-16, 2017.

Mrs. Ortell and Mrs. Harris will have the opportunity to participate in a number of workshops, institutes, briefings, and will represent the State of California at the Advisory Council and the Southwest Area Business Meeting. They will bring back a wealth of information to share with district secretaries and the local affiliate members. Both Mrs. Ortell and Mrs. Harris truly appreciate the support and investment that District Administration has placed in them and other office professionals in the District.

Membership in both organizations has increased, thanks to District support. There are currently nine District office employees on the State Executive Board, who hold leadership roles, plus seven more who are involved on committees. With the support of District Administration, the District's office professionals are learning and growing professionally, often beyond their comfort zone.

Last year, at the 2016 National conference, both Mrs. Ortell and Mrs. Harris were recognized for completing NAEOP’s Professional Standards Program (PSP), and for attaining the distinction of a Certified Educational Office Employee (CEOE). These achievements are recognized and awarded only through the National Association of Educational Office Professionals. Both ladies strive to encourage other District office staff to go for their PSP and CEOE.
Funding: The cost for this item is included in the 2016-17 operating budget funded through Educational Services/General Fund and the Superintendent’s Office/General Fund.
Recommendation: It is recommended that the Board of Trustees approve the out-of-state conference request for Lori Ortell and Christine Harris to attend the National Association of Educational Office Professionals Annual Conference in Greenville, South Carolina, July 11-16, 2017.
