Summary: Ms. Gretchen Schultz, Science Teacher, Paloma Valley High School, is requesting the Board of Trustees’ approval to attend the 2018 National Science Education Leadership Association (NSELA) Summer Leadership Institute in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, July 9-11, 2018.

On October 18, 2017, the Board of Trustees approved a revised job description for the Teacher on Special Assignment (TOSA) - Science and Science Technology Engineering Math (STEM) Program. The position was flown and Ms. Gretchen Schultz has accepted the position as the new TOSA - Science and STEM, effective July 1, 2018.

With Ms. Schultz undertaking this new position, it is very timely that the 2018 NSELA Summer Leadership Institute (SLI) will be held all day July 9th and 10th, and on the morning of July 11th. Additionally, this year's SLI is held in conjunction with the National Science Teachers Association’s 7th Annual STEM Forum and Expo, July 11–13, at the Philadelphia Convention Center.

The SLI Strands for 2018 include:

2) Career Implications for Science Education: These sessions include Avoiding Random Acts of STEM: Making Meaningful Connections Across the Disciplines, and Cross-Cutting Concepts in a 3-Dimensional Lesson Template; Connecting CTE & STEM to the workforce; Making the “M” in STEM relevant”; and Cross-Cutting Concepts in a 3-Dimensional Lesson Template.

3) Computational Thinking/Computer Science: Sessions will include Integrating Science Learning and Computational Thinking for All Students with Okhee Lee and Associates, and more!

4) Equity for Students in STEM: These sessions will look at Science and Language Learning and Assessment for all students including English Language Learners.

5) NextGen TIME: This full day session examines NextGen TIME, which is both a Toolkit for Instructional Materials Evaluation and a process for Transforming Implementation through Materials Evaluation. It is a set of tools and processes which allows districts and educators to analyze and select materials based on specified criteria and scoring guidance and to provide educators with a transformative professional learning experience highly focused on the NGSS and the implementation of high quality materials.

Attending the Summer Leadership Institute will provide Ms. Schultz with great networking opportunities to learn and interact with colleagues from respective leadership communities.

The total cost for Ms. Schultz to attend the Summer Leadership Institute is approximately $1,500.
Funding: The cost of this item is funded through the District Title I Professional Development Fund.
