Amendment No. 1 to Agreement with Turnitin 17-18.pdf
Summary: The District would like to retain the services of Turnitin for a one-year renewal term for software and training services for the 2017-18 school year. The Board approved the initial year of the contract at the Board Meeting on June 17, 2016.

The English Language Arts (ELA) Subject Area Council (SAC) is comprised of ELA Department Chairs across the District. The ELA SAC proposed a solution to promote originality and proper citations for student work samples ranging from essays to performance tasks. The group reviewed different programs and unanimously approved Turnitin as the tool to address this need. Turnitin will afford teachers the opportunity to focus their time and energy on providing feedback to students on the content of their writing as opposed to validating originality and monitoring plagiarism.

Turnitin is an online software program that supports Academic Integrity, Effective Feedback, and Peer Review for student writing. It also provides feedback to students on their use of source material with the world’s largest content comparison database. It highlights original writing and proper citation. When institutions adopt Turnitin Feedback Studio, unoriginal work decreases by 33 percent, and students are challenged to think more critically.

The total cost for the program is $41,282 for the 2017-18 school year.

The initial term of the original Agreement was from August 1, 2016 to July 31, 2017. The original Agreement allowed for up to four (4) additional one (1) year terms in accordance with Education Code 17596. The term of this renewal for the 2017-18 school year shall be from August 1, 2017 to July 31, 2018 and will be the first of the (4) additional one (1) year terms.

Education Code 17604 and 17605: The Governing Board delegates the power to contract and purchase supplies, equipment and services.
Funding: The cost for this item is included in the 2017-18 operating budget funded through the Local Control Accountability Plan Supplemental and Concentration Funds.
Recommendation: It is recommended that the Board of Trustees approve Amendment No. 1 to the Agreement with Turnitin for software and training services.
