Summary: Mr. Anthony Maldonaldo, California Military Institute (CMI) Math Teacher, is requesting the Board of Trustees’ approval to attend the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) 2018 Annual Meeting and Expo, in Washington D.C., scheduled for April 25-28, 2018. Educators at all levels will be brought together to enhance their professional skills, knowledge, and careers at this expo. Mr. Maldonaldo would like to attend this event as this is an opportunity to make an investment in students’ academic growth and success as well as meet his professional development goals.

The latest teaching trends and topics of the NCTM Conference will include:

1) Tools and Technology: Using Technology to Effectively Teach and Learn Mathematics

2)Access, Equity, and Empowerment: Teaching Mathematics with an Equity Stance

3)Purposeful Curriculum: Cultivating Coherence and Connections

4) Teaching, Learning, and Curriculum: Best Practices for Engaging Students

5) Assessment: A Tool for Purposeful Planning and Instruction

6) Professionalism: Learning Together as Teachers

7) Mathematical Modeling: Interpreting the World through Mathematics

8) Emerging Issues and Hot Topics

By attending this conference, Mr. Maldonaldo will be able to select from more than 200 sessions and gallery workshops targeted by grade levels and special topics. He expects to learn practices central to teaching the Common Core State Standards while giving students the tools they need to succeed. In addition, he will be able to learn about new classroom resources and technology, interact and network with colleagues, and bring back activities and lesson plans that can immediately be implemented in the classroom.
Funding: The cost for this item is through the CMI Local Control Accountability Plan Supplemental and Concentration funds.
Recommendation: It is recommended that the Board of Trustees approve the out-of-state conference request for Anthony Maldonaldo to attend the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics Annual Meeting and Exposition, in Washington D.C., April 25-28, 2018.
