Summary: Heritage High School (HHS) drama teacher, Mr. Greg Newman, has submitted an overnight field trip request for drama students to attend the 2017 California State Thespian Conference in Upland, California, March 31 – April 2, 2017. Pending the outcome of the State competition, Mr. Newman is also asking for approval for any members who qualify to be allowed to attend the International Thespian Festival, June 19-24, 2017 in Omaha, Nebraska.

The California State Thespian Conference is one of the largest state conferences in the nation. It allows students in the theatre arts to compete, attend workshops, and audition for scholarships.

This year the state conference is being held in Upland. Because events usually go until 9:00 or 10:00 p.m. and begin again early the next morning, staying overnight will allow students to get more sleep and not be out on the road late at night. The conference lasts three days and falls on Friday-Sunday, requiring students missing only one school day.

Mr. Newman is excited to take 10-12 students from Heritage High School to the state conference for the first time. When he taught at Paloma Valley High School he enjoyed taking his students every year to this competition.

Mr. Newman will serve as the chaperone. Transportation will be provided via one of the HHS site vans. The cost per student for registration is $150 per person. The registration fees will be paid through the ASB Drama Club account.

Students who merit Exceptional Ratings at the state level will qualify to go to the International Thespian Festival which will be held June 19-24, 2017 in Omaha, Nebraska. At the International Festival, students participate with other students from all over the world, attend workshops with Broadway and Hollywood professionals, and have the opportunity to get direct auditions with dozens of major colleges. This provides a valuable experience for students who are planning on pursuing careers in the performing arts and raises the level of leadership among all those who participate. The cost for participating students is $740 for 6 days with room and board included.
Funding: The cost for this item is covered partially by Heritage High School's Associated Student Body Drama Club Account and through student fundraising.
