Summary:

Sophia Wheeler, California Military Institute’s (CMI) Friday Night Live Club Advisor, has submitted an overnight field trip request for their cadets involved in the Friday Night Live Club to attend the Active Youth Conference, which is sponsored by Riverside Friday Night Live. This conference will take place at Camp Buckhorn in Idyllwild, California, March 16-18, 2018 for high school students.
The skills taught at these camps include basic leadership and specific leadership skills that have to do with prevention education in the areas of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Other Drugs (ATOD). These leadership skills will enable students to facilitate activities and club events while under the direction of a staff advisor and a county liaison. The conference is considered to be a wonderful team-building opportunity with a “taking it home” component that involves very specific planning for implementing material presented at the conference.
The exercises and program examples that students have participated in over the last few years have helped to make CMI's Safe and Drug-Free program be even stronger, giving the students expanded ideas of what young people are able to accomplish.
The cost for attending the conference is $110 per student and adult, which covers lodging and food. Bussing is being provided by the Riverside Friday Night Live group. A maximum of 14 high school students with two adult chaperones will attend the high school camp.

The cost for this item is included in the 2017-18 operating budget funded through CMI LCAP monies, and Friday Night Live Club/Associated Student Body funds.
