Summary: Julie Zierold, Director of Curriculum and Instruction, is requesting that the Board of Trustees approve her out-of-state attendance at the Native American student Advocacy Institute 2018, in Honolulu, Hawaii, June 6-8, 2018.

As a participating district in the Riverside County Education Collaborative (RCEC), the Perris Union High School District has been invited to attend the Native American Student Advocacy Institute (NASAI). The RCEC has been invited as a result of the ongoing progress that the collaborative has shown in key college and career readiness indicators. Julie Zierold, Director of Curriculum and Instruction, will also be presenting on behalf of the District at the Institute in Honolulu, Hawaii, on the topic of “FAFSA for Underserved Populations” (Free Application for Federal Student Aid).

The Institutes purpose is:

1) To address the educational challenges facing Native students.

2) To galvanize and build national networks to enhance the academic performance of American Indian, Alaska Native, and Native Hawaiian students and to close the educational achievement gap.

Participants will work toward a college and career readiness framework for their district that can be utilized to:

1) Get firsthand insights from successful programs and learn innovative approaches that positively impact Native students.

2) Form new connections and collaborate with colleagues from across the country who are working to achieve excellence and equity in education.

3) See what great things happen when education professionals work together to increase access and opportunity for American Indian, Alaska Native, and Native Hawaiian students.

The Native American Student Advocacy Institute (NASAI) is focused on mentoring native youth to reach their cultural and educational goals and to increase intervention strategies for students identified as academic underachievers. The attendees will explore the providing data demonstrating the benefits of those strategies and how to incorporate them.

At the conclusion of the institute, the RCEC will have identified key student success indicators, and developed/refined District data to track student outcomes, analyzed formative and outcome data to assess student progress around research, and prioritized the development or expansion of college and career readiness programs for American Indian, Alaska Native, and Native Hawaiian students and identify where additional programs are needed. The development of an action plan to implement will be the final product of the RCEC and the Perris Union High School District. The RCEC will fund the conference cost, and each district is responsible to fund the travel and lodging expenses for their representative to attend the institute.
