Summary: The District's Educational Services Department is submitting two revised and one new Riverside County Office of Education/Career Technical Education (CTE) courses titled CTE Public Safety Personnel/First Aid, CTE Sports Medicine and Therapeutic Services Level 1, and CTE Introduction to Medical Professions. All three of these courses are part of the CTE Public Safety pathways and are all year-long courses.

The CTE Public Safety Personnel/First Aid is a revised course with the previous name being CTE Emergency Medical Response. It has been revised to meet the UC/CSU A-G requirements. This course will teach students to provide immediate care to an ill or injured person and train them in the pre-hospital setting to assist Emergency Medical Services (EMS) providers, Firefighters, Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs), Paramedics, and Law Enforcement Officers. Instructional content area skills include the history of healthcare, anatomy systems and related medical terminology. The course covers EMS overview, CPR and First Aid skills, patient assessment, legal and ethical issues, triage, assisting in clinical settings, and emergency responsibilities. This course will prepare students for enrollment in a health course capstone.

The CTE Sports Medicine & Therapeutic Services Level 1 is a revised course with the previous name of CTE Sports Therapy. It has been revised to meet the UC/CSU A-G requirements. This course will offer an overview and expand the students knowledge of health careers and establish a foundational platform for careers in physical therapy, exercise science, athletic training, sports medicine, and other careers relating to the medical or paramedical field. The students will explore and examine the introductory components of medical terminology, human anatomy and physiology, emergency medical procedures, soft tissue and bone injuries, sports medicine, physical fitness, and the causes, symptoms and management of common athletic injuries. Students will acquire and demonstrate practical, hands-on experience in the prevention, assessment, treatment, taping, wrapping and rehabilitation of common sports injuries. The curriculum for this course includes high level 21st century skills, such as effective communication, critical thinking, creativity, and collaboration that have been identified as foundational skills for success in this field.

The CTE Introduction to Medical Professionals course is a new course in the public safety pathway designed to provide students with an overall introduction to medical professions including legal and ethical responsibilities of a medical professional, measurements and mathematics applied in healthcare careers, body systems along with anatomy and physiology, and will assist students in developing a career plan. Emphasis is placed on the skills necessary to enter the healthcare field and exploration of the many different employment areas within healthcare.

CTE Public Safety Personnel/First Aid and CTE Sports Medicine and Therapeutic Services Level 1 meet the UC/CSU A-G requirement “G” College Prep Elective. CTE Introduction to Medical Professions is not an a-g course as it is an introductory course for those planning to pursue various medical professions.

“CTE Public Safety Personnel/First Aid”, “CTE Sports Medicine and Therapeutic Services Level 1” and “CTE Introduction to Medical Professions” have been approved by the Director of Curriculum and Instruction and the Assistant Superintendent of Educational Services. Since these are pre-approved courses by the Riverside County Office of Education they only require one reading by our Board of Trustees.
