Summary: The Perris Union High School District would like to contract with Corwin Press, Incorporated for professional development services to introduce instructional strategies developed by Fisher and Frey that include purposeful planning, collaborative conversations, and close and critical reading, with an emphasis on linking English language development to various content areas. This training is for all PUHSD teachers and will take place during the October professional development days (October 10-11, 2019). The trainings will include a total of eight sessions within the two (2) days to accommodate all teachers. Included in the training are specific strategies to facilitate collaborative conversations on close reading and text-dependent questions, access to complex texts, formative assessments, and the gradual release of responsibility model.

Educators will develop the skills to use the five access points within a framework of gradual release of responsibility model that include purpose and modeling, close and scaffolded reading instruction, collaborative conversations, an independent reading staircase, and performance in order to plan instruction based on student understanding in order to increase collaborative learning. The following educators will present on specific content areas including ELA, Mathematics, Social Sciences, and Science: Javier Vaca, Joseph Assof, Marisol Thayre, and Kimberly Elliot Padgitt.

The total cost of services for this Agreement is $36,000 which will be funded through the Low-Performing Students Block Grant.
Funding: The cost for this item will be included in the 2019-20 operating budget funded through the Low-Performing Students Block Grant, not the General Fund.
Recommendation: It is recommended that the Board of Trustees approve the Agreement for Consulting Services with Corwin Press, Incorporated for Professional Development Services.
