Summary: Heritage High School’s (HHS) Dance Advisor, Hope Burns, is submitting a request for the Heritage High School Dance Team to attend the 38th Annual Southwest Dance, Movement, and Acro-Sports Workshop at the Palm Springs Convention Center in Palm Springs, California on May 30-31, 2020. This is the 16th year that the HHS dance team has attended the dance workshop.

This two (2) day event is sponsored by the California Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance (CAHPERD). Students will take up to five (5) classes each day, choosing from a wide range of dance and fitness classes, including but not limited to: Polynesian Dance, Afro Cuban, Island Dance, Ballet Barre, Hip Hop, Ballet Variations, Jazz Progressions, Salsa Sizzle, Clogging, Swing, and Cha Cha.

The students on the dance team are interested in pursuing a career in dance, and this workshop will give them an idea of the different avenues they can take in a dance career. Students will learn different styles and techniques, what dance is, and will have the opportunity to take classes from a variety of teachers. This is an excellent opportunity for students to learn different genres of dance beyond what they learn in their dance classes. The material students learn will give them new ideas for their choreography and help them grow into well-rounded dancers. This workshop will help the dance advisor better prepare these dancers to continue on at the college level and mold them into future professional dancers.

The students will be holding fundraisers to pay for their trip. The cost for the twenty-seven (27) students and two (2) adult chaperones to attend this dance event is approximately $2,030. All fees are being paid out of Heritage High School's Dance Team Associated Student Body account. Transportation will be provided by district vehicles.
Funding: The cost for this item is included in the 2019-20 operating budget funded through Heritage High School's Dance Team Associated Student Body Account, not the General Fund.
Recommendation: It is recommended that the Board of Trustees approve the overnight field trip request for Heritage High School's Dance team to attend the 38th Annual Southwest Dance, Movement, and Acro-Sports Workshop at the Palm Springs Convention Center in Palm Springs, California, May 30-31, 2020.
