Summary:

The District and the Mt. San Jacinto Community College District’s (MSJCCD) wish to enter into a Memorandum of Understanding to (MOU) to provide English as a Second Language (ESL) Multi-Level 1 and General Equivalency Diploma (GED) courses at the Perris Community Adult School. The District will provide the facility at the Perris Community Adult School for the classes and MSJCCD’s Continuing Education Department will conduct the classes. ESL Multi-Level 1: This course focuses on improving reading comprehension, speed, vocabulary, critical thinking, and test-taking skills. This course also emphasizes the organization and integration of source material into effective written and verbal responses. Varied reading materials, assignments, and assessments provide opportunities for students to develop the necessary skills, strategies, and knowledge for increased reading effectiveness. The benefits of taking the course include: 1) ESL classes help all immigrants improve their English 2) ESL classes help immigrants to find work 3) ESL classes help students cope with native speakers 4) ESL classes teach about the opportunities, rights and responsibilities of living in the U.S. 5) ESL classes provide an environment to teach about racial tolerance and multiculturalism GED: The GED course offering students assistance in English, Reading, Writing, Math, Science and Social Studies. Students will complete practice exams throughout the course. They will receive instruction, guidance and support from a credentialed teacher. The benefits of taking the GED course include: 1) GED classes contribute to the alleviation of poverty 2) GED classes contribute to the growth of the economy 3) GED classes contribute to the alleviation of unemployment The term of this Agreements will be August 27, 2018 through June 30, 2019. Education Code 17604 and 17605: The Governing Board delegates the power to contract and purchase supplies, equipment and services.
