Summary: Jennifer Thomasian, Principal of Paloma Valley High School attended the "On Your Mark Grading Practices" workshop on December 6-7, 2017 in Seattle, Washington.

The "On Your Mark Grading Practices" workshop provides accurate, specific, timely feedback designed to improve student performance. Unfortunately, students and their parents state that they do not understand the grades received, and current grading practices often demoralize students rather than spur them on to continuous improvement. This workshop challenges antiquated practices like grading curves, zeroes, and averaged grades. Assessment experts will provide attendees with research-based options for grading and reporting that are fair, motivating, and meaningful to both students and parents.

By attending the conference, attendees are able to acquire strategies to ensure grading is based on clear standards or competencies:

1) Understand how to use student data notebooks successfully.
2) Reflect on present practices to determine their alignment with evidence of effectiveness.
3) Review samples of report cards that are meaningful to students and parents.
4) Apply tools and templates to support the efficient use of feedback for individuals and teams.
5) Discover strategies that ensure students own their learning and are motivated to greater achievement.
6) Examine grading practices that are based on mastery.

The reason this item is coming for ratification is due to the opportunity presenting itself after the previous agenda deadline.
