Summary: Heather Avila, teacher at Perris High School (PHS), Lourdes Medrano, teacher at Heritage High School (HHS), and Alejandra Garcia, Community Liaison at Heritage High School (HHS), are requesting the Board of Trustees approve their conference request to attend the 2018 National Family and Community Engagement Conference in Cleveland, Ohio, July 11-13, 2018.

The National Family and Community Engagement Conference, is an annual convening where school and district administrators, educators, families and students come together to focus on solutions that enhance and expand engagement through family-school-community partnerships. With pre-conference site visits, plenaries, workshops and other networking activities, participants are immersed in many examples of high-impact engagement work taking place across the country. The strands focus on:

1) Parent leadership, advocacy and community organizing are key to ensuring healthy communities and thriving spaces in which families and children can learn and grow.

2) Promote inclusion, ensure equity and create opportunity while improving outcomes for children and adults with and without disabilities, regardless of race, language, culture or economic status.

3) Relationship building and trust are foundational to high-quality family engagement and community practice.

4) Research, evaluation and data collection connecting research, policy and practice is critical to improving and sustaining outcomes for children, youth and families.

5) Early learning and literacy with young children and families is the best educational investment, a springboard for lifelong learning.

As the District continues to advance the efforts in meeting LCAP Goal #4: “Secure and strengthen the home-school-community connections and communications,” this conference will provide the opportunities to network and discover best practices as seen across the nation.
Funding: The cost for this item is included in the 2018-19 operating budget funded through District Title I funds.
