Summary: In December 2019 an outbreak of respiratory illness due to a novel coronavirus (a disease now known as COVID-19) was identified and has impacted more than 75 countries including the United States. On March 8, 2020, the County of Riverside Public Health Officer declared a Local Health Emergency subsequently ratified by the Board of Supervisors on March 10, 2020; on March 10, 2020, the County of Riverside Board of Supervisors proclaimed a Local Emergency; on March 13, 2020, President Trump declared a national state of emergency; on March 16, 2020, the Public Health Officer of the County of Riverside ordered the cancelling of all gatherings with expected presence above 10 individuals; and on March 17, 2020, the Public Health Officer of the County of Riverside amended a previous order dated March 13, 2020 closing all schools including, but not limited to, all preschools, K-12 public, private and charter schools, community colleges, public, private, nonprofit and for profit colleges and universities beginning March 16, 2020.

On July 17, 2020, Governor Gavin Newsom announced that schools in Riverside County will remain physically closed, providing only distance learning until specific criteria was met by the County. On July 8, 2020, the Perris Union High School District voted unanimously to open District schools in a Distance Learning model for the first six weeks. On Tuesday, October 20, 2020, Riverside county moved back into the purple tier prohibiting school sites from opening.

The District would like to extend the Distance Learning model an additional six weeks, as Riverside County has not attained approval to open schools in a hybrid or traditional model according to guidelines.
