Summary: Heritage High School’s (HHS) Agriculture teacher, Jeremy Perotti, has submitted an overnight field trip request for 30 of the HHS Future Farmers of America (FFA) students to attend the Modesto Junior College Agriculture Field Day Competition, which will be held on March 24-25, 2017, in Modesto, California.

The Modesto Field Day event is open to FFA and 4-H high school students from California and surrounding states who come to Modesto to compete in 24 different agriculturally based judging contests. The contests range from livestock judging to agriculture computer applications. Modesto JC students, representing a variety of majors, coordinate the contests while faculty and staff serve as advisors.

Students attending this event will be able to compete at a high level in their FFA judging teams while preparing them for the state finals, as this is one of the most competitive field days in California. It will also enable them to earn higher awards and placement in future competitions. The specific judging events that the HHS FFA students will be competing in include: Ornamental Horticulture, Vegetable Crop, the Best Informed Greenhand, Farm Records, Livestock and Veterinary Science.

Traveling up to Modesto will also offer the opportunity to stop along the way to learn about the rich history of our state and observe the different plant life and vast amount of agriculture production in Central California.

Thirty students and four adults will attend the Modesto field day. Transportation will be provided via district and site vehicles. The conference entry fees, transportation costs, and lodging costs will be paid from Associated Student Body fundraising and the Perkins fund.

The Board of Trustees had previously approved the HHS FFA students going to the Chico Field Day event in March; however, booking issues prevented staff from being able to secure their spots so they decided to go to the Modesto Junior College Agriculture Field Day Competition instead.
Funding: The cost for this item is included in the 2016-17 operating budget funded through the Perkins Grant, and the Agriculture ASB account.
Recommendation: It is recommended that the Board of Trustees approve the overnight field trip request for Heritage High School's Future Farmers of America students to attend the Modesto Junior College Agriculture Field Day Competition on March 24-25, 2017, in Modesto, California.
