Summary: On February 24, 2018, the California Military Institute (CMI) robotics team, "Victrix Aedifex", had a very successful competition at the FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC) Regional Championship event that was held in Monrovia, California. CMI is pleased to announce that the robotics team "Victrix Aedifex" will now advance to the FTC West Super-Regional Championship Tournament, which will be held in Spokane, Washington, on March 8-11, 2018.

Team "Victrix Aedifex" is one of 72 top teams from across the 13 western states as State and Regional Champions that will compete in the West Super-Regional Championship Tournament that is being held March 8-11, 2018, at the Spokane Convention Center in Spokane, Washington. Winning teams from this competition will move onto the 2018 World Championships in St. Louis, Missouri and Houston, Texas. CMI will be sending five students and three staff to compete in the West Super-Regional FTC Championship.

The FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC) is more than a robotics program. They are focused on building a better world for tomorrow by engaging students in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM).

FTC is about teaching students the value of hard work, innovation and creativity. It goes beyond competition by teaching teenagers the importance of working together, sharing ideas and treating each other with respect and dignity.

The FIRST Tech Challenge is designed for students grades 7-12 and ages 12-18 years old. Teams are challenged to design, build, program, and operate robots to play a floor game in an alliance format. Participants call it “the hardest fun you’ll ever have!” Guided by adult coaches and mentors, students develop STEM skills and practice engineering principles while realizing the value of hard work, innovation, and sharing ideas. Super-Regional Championship Tournaments are events to which Teams from FTC West include: Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, Utah, Washington and Wyoming.

The five students will be traveling with three adults on the trip. The three adults include Efrain Estrada and Tomeryl Collier from CMI, and Dian Martin, Director of Learning Support Services.

The estimated cost is approximately $1,200 per person. Expenses for the students will be paid from Associated Student Body (ASB) funds, and adults expenses from the Local Control Accountability Plan (LCAP) funds.

This item is coming as a ratification since the team just qualified for this event less than two weeks prior to going to the FTC West Super-Regional Championships in Spokane, Washington, which didn’t allow for posting on an earlier Board agenda.
Funding: The cost for this item is included in the 2017-18 California Military Institute’s Local Control Accountability Plan Supplemental and Concentration funds, student fundraising and Title I (Martin).
Recommendation: It is recommended that the Board of Trustees ratify the out-of-state field trip and conference request for Efrain Estrada and Tomeryl Collier from CMI, and Dian Martin, Director of Learning Support Services, along with five students to participate in the 2018 First Tech Challenge West Super-Regional Championships in Spokane, Washington, March 8-11, 2018.
