Summary: On January 17, 2018, the Board of Trustees approved Heritage High School theater student members to attend the 2018 California State Thespian Conference in Upland, California, which was held on March 29-31, 2018.

Heritage High School (HHS) drama teacher, Mr. Greg Newman, would like to share with the Board of Trustees that at the State Thespian Conference held just three weeks ago, that 12 of his best drama students competed in various acting competitions and attended workshops. After competing against hundreds of students, four HHS students received five (5) superior rankings in their categories, with one student taking 3rd place overall in the state. These accomplishments qualify the four students to compete at the next level, the International Thespian Conference held each year in Lincoln, Nebraska.

Mr. Newman has submitted an out-of-state field trip request for those members who qualified to be allowed to attend the International Thespian Festival, June 25-30, 2018, in Lincoln, Nebraska. Of the four students, three have elected to go onto the national competition. This was only the second year for HHS to attend the state conference.

At the International Festival students participate with other students from all over the world, attend workshops with Broadway and Hollywood professionals, and have the opportunity to get direct auditions with dozens of major colleges. This provides a valuable experience for students who are planning on pursuing careers in the performing arts and raises the level of leadership among all those who participate. The cost for participating students is approximately $800 per student plus the cost of airfare.

Mr. Newman will serve as the chaperone. The registration fees will be paid through the ASB Drama Club account. The fee includes dormitory style room and board, as well as enrollment in various workshops, competitions, and attendance at 6 plays. Students will fundraise to pay for the travel cost.
Funding: The cost for this item is covered partially by Heritage High School's Associated Student Body Drama Club Account and through student fundraising.
Recommendation: It is recommended that the Board of Trustees approve the out-of-state field trip request for Heritage High School theater students to attend the International Thespian Festival to be held June 25-30, 2018, in Lincoln, Nebraska.
