Summary: For the third year, students from the Perris High School’s Future Farmers of America programs are being given the opportunity to participate in a Summer Internship at Rutledge Farm in Yuma, Colorado. This opportunity is provided by Kristy Rutledge, owner of the Rutledge Farm and is a former Perris Union High School District teacher. The trip will take place July 5-14, 2017. The students will be accompanied by Krystal Thomas, Perris High School Agriculture Teacher and FFA Advisor.

The trip will encompass quite a busy schedule as they will be visiting a working dairy, with a feedlot, horse ranch, 6000 pigs, and other animals. They will see first-hand how organic farming compares to non-organic (millet, blue corn, etc.), and even get their hands dirty at the composting area. Staying on a farm of this size will be fun but not without their share of work for the girls, as they will be expected to be up and out by 7:00 a.m., after a hearty breakfast, and then work 3-4 hours in the field. While in Colorado, they will be able to go to the Colorado County Fair and visit FFA exhibits. They will also be taking a day trip to Colorado State University in Ft. Collins.

The total cost for the trip is approximately $6,100. This is in addition to the generous in-kind donations from Rutledge Farm. The cost for the students to attend this trip will be paid for by donations that will be made to the Perris High School FFA Student Body Fund and are estimated to be $1,500. The cost for the teacher chaperone, estimated to be $4,600, will be paid by the General Fund.
Funding: The cost for this item is funded by the General Fund, Perris High School FFA Student Body Funds and In-Kind Donations.
Recommendation: It is recommended that the Board of Trustees approve the out-of-state field trip request for three Perris High School Future Farmers of America students and one teacher to participate in a Summer Internship at the Rutledge Farm, in Yuma, Colorado, July 5-14, 2017.
