Summary: Mr. Efrain Estrada, California Military Institute instructor, is requesting that the Board of Trustees ratify his attendance at the Code.org Computer Science Discoveries Professional Development Training in Phoenix, Arizona, July 16-21, 2017.

The Code.org Computer Science (CS) Discoveries Professional Learning Program is designed for middle school educators who are interested in teaching Code.org’s CS Discoveries courses either as a semester or full-year offering. This program prepares educators to provide high quality instruction based on the CS Discoveries curriculum, tools and approach to students in their classrooms.

The program has two components:

1) Code.org TeacherCon - An intensive, hands-on, in-person workshop providing foundational experiences with computer science and the Code.org suite of tools. The week-long workshop is the primary capacity building experience for teachers prior to their first year of instruction. Participants will explore the curriculum and tools, consider and experiment with specific classroom management and teaching strategies, and build a local community of teachers who are using this curriculum.

2) Continuing Professional Development - A menu of online and local in-person professional development options from which educators can build a customized personal learning pathway. This phase of the program is blended, with ongoing in-person meetings as well as online activities.

The in-person meetings are run by local facilitators. They focus on the essential elements of the course, such as teaching new content, keeping the classroom environment equitable and engaging, and continuing to build pedagogical strategies.

The online activities are focused on building the online professional learning community, providing continued support with tools and content, introducing new and helpful resources for teaching the course, and further exploring the curriculum.

Teachers attend a 5-day in-person, conference-style workshop designed to introduce the Computer Science (CS) concepts from the curriculum, Advanced Placement (AP) elements of the course, and core teaching practices. Teachers continue with job-embedded workshops and online modules focused on supporting teachers in their first year of implementation.

This out-of-state conference request is being taken to the Board as a ratification due to missing the board deadline for agenda items.
Funding: There is no cost for this item to CMI. It is funded through Code.org.
Recommendation: It is recommended that the Board of Trustees ratify the out-of-state conference request for Mr. Efrain Estrada to attend the Code.org Computer Science Discoveries Professional Development Training in Phoenix, Arizona, July 16-21, 2017.
