Summary: Two new Riverside County Office of Education/Career Technical Education (CTE) courses titled “Maintenance and Light Repair I (Introduction to Automotive Service)” and “Maintenance and Light Repair II (Basic Automotive Service)” are being submitted. These are both year-long CTE courses. “Maintenance and Light Repair I” meets the UC/CSU A-G Requirement “G”. “Maintenance and Light Repair II” is still pending to meet the same requirement and has an 'In Progress' status.

“Maintenance and Light Repair I” will cover important skills and knowledge on becoming a professional service technician. Course content focuses on safety, safety expectations and record keeping, professional attitude and behavior expectations, shop and personal safety, safe and appropriate tool and equipment operations, basic automotive service preparation and practices, basic vehicle engine service, maintenance, basic tire and wheel service, and safe use of lift equipment.

“Maintenance and Light Repair II” will cover important skills and knowledge on becoming a professional service technician. Students study automotive general electrical systems, starting and charging systems, batteries, lighting, and electrical accessories.

“Maintenance and Light Repair I” is articulated with the equivalent Mt. San Jacinto College course, named Basic Auto Mechanics/AUME100. The creation and articulation of this course is necessary in order to continue the current articulation of our transportation pathway.

Both of these courses may be used toward meeting the National Automotive Technician Education Foundation (NAFTE) certification.

“Maintenance and Light Repair I and II” have been approved by the Director of Curriculum and Instruction and the Assistant Superintendent of Educational Services.
