Summary: On May 18, 2016, the Board of Trustees approved Advanced Algebra with Financial Applications as a pilot course for 2016-17. At the beginning of the 2016-17 second semester, the teacher doing the pilot reported positively about the success of the course and the recommendation to continue offering it to students.

Evaluation of the pilot, submitted by the teacher:

• Student Success: (1st semester data): Student passing rate: 94%; Average percentage in class: 81%

• Enrollment: Course was offered to seniors only; class was filled with 34 students.

• Teaching Methods: Various methods used throughout course such as: Discussion, Use of technology, project based, real life application, lecture, collaboration, and formal assessment.

Advanced Algebra with Financial Applications meets the A-G requirements as a mathematics course. The course has been approved by the Director of Curriculum & Instruction and the Assistant Superintendent of Educational Services as a new high school math course effective 2017-18.

At this time we are requesting Board approval to offer this course districtwide.

Recommendation: It is recommended that the Board of Trustees receive for review and consideration, as part of the first reading, the new high school course: Advanced Algebra with Financial Applications.
