Summary: Debbie Georgianna, English teacher and Yearbook Advisor at Perris High School, is respectfully submitting a request for the Board’s consideration and approval for Perris High yearbook students to go on an overnight trip to the Jostens' San Diego National Yearbook Workshop at the University of San Diego on July 24-27, 2017.

This is a national workshop with hundreds of yearbook students in attendance from schools all over the country. It is an opportunity for training in yearbook production through a variety of programs by a selection of workshops such as InDesign, Year Tech, Adobe Photoshop, Photojournalism and business management courses, and others.

One student who is in yearbook this year will be the Editor in Chief next year and will be taking the Editor track at the workshop which will include ideas for their leadership position: how best to encourage their staff, hot to motivate, how to help without doing the owrk for them and much more. The other students will receive instruction on basic journalism, as well as instruction on coverage and design and layout, basic storytelling, photography, interviewing, marketing and instructions for using Yearbook Avenue, Josten’s software program for creating the yearbook. Some will receive specific instruction about photography: shutter speed, action, depth of field, camera lenses and camera functions. These students will serve as Ms. Georgianna’s core staff and will assist the rest of the class as they move into the year and through the process of covering activities during the year for the yearbook.

Ms. Georgianna will also be attending workshops designed for an experienced adviser including design, layout trends, use of graphic elements, team motivation strategies, etc.

Jostens has a strict code of conduct that all students are to abide by. Students are not allowed to leave the University of San Diego unless as part of a specified group activity chaperoned by an adult. Jostens requires that all students remain on campus throughout the duration of Jostens’ workshop.

Transportation to and from the workshop will be provided by a district vehicle. There will be six students attending along with one male adult chaperone, plus Ms. Georgianna, the Yearbook Advisor.

The cost to attend Jostens’ National Yearbook Workshop is $495 per student, which includes three nights of lodging, meals, workshop registration/materials and a t-shirt (advisors expenses are included). All costs are being paid for by Perris High School’s general fund and the student yearbook account.
Funding: The cost for this item is funded through Perris High School’s Yearbook monies under the Lottery fund.
Recommendation: It is recommended that the Board of Trustees approve the overnight field trip request for Perris High School yearbook students to attend the Josten’s San Diego National Yearbook Workshop, July 24-27, 2017.
