Summary: Heritage High School’s (HHS) Agriculture teacher, Jeremy Perotti, has submitted an overnight field trip request for 30 of the HHS Future Farmers of America (FFA) students to attend the Chico FFA Field Day Competition, which will be held on the Chico State University campus on March 10-12, 2017. The Chico FFA Field Day event is the largest state level Career Development Event (CDE) of the year. The top teams will be competing at this event in preparation for the state finals competition in May. Students will be exposed to this top agricultural university while learning more about their contests and competing at the highest level in the state. Students will be exposed to the university atmosphere which will help motivate them to work hard towards their goals for their future careers. Students will develop hands on leadership skills as they interact will others students, judges, and teachers at their competition sites.

FFA members attending the Chico FFA Field Day competition will be able to visit with other FFA members from throughout California as well as leaders from other states and the National FFA. Each attendee will be focusing on the following objectives: participate in Career Development Event that will enhance their skills, develop leadership skills through interaction with other members, create friendships with other members from various chapters in California, receive awards and honors for hard work and achievement in their contest area, and be exposed to the university setting and see new cultures and experience new places.

Exposure to this level of competition will enhance our students’ ability to perform at a higher level and in turn enhance skills and knowledge in their given contests. It will also enable them to earn higher awards and placement in future competitions.

Thirty students and four adults will attend the Chico FFA Field Day. Transportation will be provided via District vehicles. The conference entry fees, transportation costs, and lodging costs will be paid from Associated Student Body fundraising and the Perkins fund.
Funding: The cost for this item is included in the 2016-17 operating budget funded through the Perkins Grant, and the Agriculture ASB account.
Recommendation: It is recommended that the Board of Trustees approve the overnight field trip request for Heritage High School's Future Farmers of America students to attend Chico State FFA Field Day Competition in Chico, California, March 10-12, 2017.
