Summary: On January 17, 2018, the Board of Trustees approved various Future Farmers of America (FFA) Field Days for the Heritage High School (HHS) FFA students to attend. In particular, their teams were looking forward to the Modesto field day events.

FFA Field days are events where students get to participate in different areas of agriculture by competing in contests designed to test their knowledge and abilities in different skills, trades, and knowledge of carriers like scenarios in given areas of agriculture. However, Jeremiah Perotti, FFA Advisor, discovered that when the registration window opened in late February, within minutes the event for the Veterinary Science team was closed as it had filled up that quickly.

This situation created an unfortunate position for the veterinary science team being that they must have three scores from state qualifying contests to qualify for state finals at the end of the year. Veterinary science is only one of a few contests that have this requirement as it is so impacted. The only other state-qualifying contest available to the HHS team is the Dinuba FFA Field day on March 17th at Dinuba High School in Dinuba, California, which is located near Visalia.

This change of schedule only applies to the four student members of the veterinary science team, as the other teams were able to get registered for the Modesto events. Therefore, instead of attending the Modesto Field Day, the HHS veterinary science team would like to attend the Dinuba FFA Field day.

Four students and one adult will attend the Dinuba FFA Field Day. Transportation will be provided via a District vehicle. The conference entry fees, transportation costs, and lodging costs will be paid from FFA Associated Student Body.

This item is coming to the Board of Trustees for ratification due to the fact that Mr. Perotti discovered the need to add this trip after the close of the February 21, 2018 agenda timeline.
Funding: The cost for this item is included in the HHS 2017-18 operating budget funded through the Agriculture ASB account.
Recommendation: It is recommended that the Board of Trustees amend the overnight field trip request for the Perris High School Future Farmers of America’s veterinary science team to attend the Dinuba High School Field Day event on March 17, 2018 in Dinuba, California.
