Summary:
|
California is home to 6.2 million public school students, 12 percent of the nation’s total. We have a duty not only to educate these students, but also to protect and nurture them. Academic achievement, which is our primary charge, occurs at the highest levels when students feel safe, cared for and supported. Recent events have only reinforced our obligations as the stewards of California schools. We must be vigilant where security is concerned, diligent in our attention to positive school culture and unrelenting in our advocacy for policies that increase student safety. There is no perfect solution to the question of school security, but there are guiding principles – the safety of our students being first and foremost.
