Summary: Mr. Dana Lane, Boys Varsity Basketball Coach for the California Military Institute (CMI), is submitting an out-of-state field trip request for the Board’s consideration and approval for the CMI Boys Varsity Basketball players to attend the “World Youth Basketball Tournament” (WYBT), that will be held in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii, December 17-22, 2017. This prestigious “by invitation only” tournament is held during the holidays in the month of December and represents teams from around the world. The CMI varsity basketball players are excited that they were included in this invitation. The WYBT is an ideal choice for international competition, that welcomes teams from Australia, New Zealand, China, Japan, South Korea, Samoa, Guam, Canada, South Africa, Dubai, Kuwait, Germany, Israel, Russia, England as well as mainland U.S. teams, and Hawaiian teams from Oahu, Maui, Kauai, and Big Island of Hawaii.

In addition to playing basketball, students are required to attend cultural meetings with other students from across the globe, where they will present on their own culture and experiences from their home town. Not only will students be immersed in culture from other countries, they will also learn about the culture of Hawaii and its inhabitants. The students will also visit local schools, national parks and monuments, tying it all into student learning and curriculum back home.

The cost per player to attend this experience of a lifetime is:

Players = $599 per player
Chaperones = $745 per chaperone (to be paid for by the individual chaperones attending)

Both costs include: lodging, tournament expenses, cultural activities, tours, taxes, fees. The students would like to hold fundraisers for the cost of the trip.

The following three plans are in place to account for funding this trip:

Plan A - Fund raise for the student/athletes to cover the cost of the tournament, lodging and food only, and obtain a free flight from our military partner

Plan B - Fund raise for the cost of the tournament, lodging, food and flight

Plan C - Fund raise for the cost of the tournament, lodging and food, obtain group rates for flights at parental expense

Mr. Lane wishes to emphasize the significance that this tournament is considered to be one that will give CMI international recognition. Participating in this tournament places the CMI Athletics Department on an international platform and opens up doors for student/athletes to venture into. Mr. Lane is requesting that the Board of Trustees approve this trip to allow the student athletes this once-in-a-lifetime experience, especially for seniors, as well as an opportunity for them to broaden their cultural horizons and open up new opportunities that might not come their way aside from this experience.
Funding: The cost for this item will come from the CMI Boys’ Varsity Basketball ASB account, and fundraising.
Recommendation: It is recommended that the Board of Trustees approve the out-of-state field trip request for the California Military Institute basketball players to attend the World Youth Basketball Tournament in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii, December 16-23, 2017.
