Summary: Under the direction of Solar Boat Club Advisors Stacey MacPherson, Jacqueline Cooper, Richard Santana, and Joe Jennings, students from the three high schools have the opportunity to participate in the 2018 Solar Cup competition at Lake Skinner on May 17-20, 2018. This is an overnight field trip of three (3) nights and is anticipated that there will be a maximum of 26 students and four (4) advisors who will participate in this event.

The 2018 Solar Cup is a water conservation project sponsored annually by the Eastern Municipal Water District. This event is free, open to the public, and will be held at the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California's Lake Skinner reservoir.

The crews of the three high schools will be working many hours on this seven-month project. Students will have attended workshops, completed two (2) research papers, made a Public Service Announcement/Media Relations Notice on water conservation, and completed various other requirements for the 2018 Solar Cup. This event features solar-powered boats that students design, build, equip, and then race. It is a contest of design, speed, and endurance that allows the participants to use an alternative power source in a real world application.
Funding: The cost for this item is included in the 2017-18 operating budget funded through the Eastern Municipal Water District's sponsorship of the PUHSD Solar Boat Clubs.
Recommendation: It is recommended that the Board of Trustees approve the overnight field trip request for Heritage High School, Perris High School and Paloma Valley High School Solar Boat Club students to participate in the 2018 Solar Cup at Lake Skinner, May 17-20, 2018.
