Summary:
|
This year the California Military Institute (CMI) is requesting to send five English Language Arts (ELA) teachers to the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE) annual convention in St. Louis, Missouri. The team of teachers will consist of: Jane Scibilia, ELA Department Chairperson Dr. Cheryl Ellis, ELD (English Language Development) Coach Tomeryl Collier, 7th grade ELA teacher Lisa Tarpley, 5th grade ELA teacher Kimberly Nelson, 11th grade ELA teacher. Per CMI Administration, the rationale for the five ELA teachers to attend NCTE includes: 1) After a review of existing performance data from a variety of sources (SBAC, SAT, AP, EADMS, and locally generated assessments), it is Mr. Rhodes’ intention to increase student performance at all levels, with initial emphasis on the lower grades. 2) CMI’s SBAC data justifies a need for increased training and support for their teachers to improve student learning and enhance student outcomes. The conference allows teachers to have additional training on common core standards and implementation, which will also increase student achievement and increase student outcomes in all academic areas. Return on Investment (ROI): 1) Participating teachers will create opportunities for teachers in all disciplines to enhance the skills needed to further develop students’ acquisition and enhancement of literacy skills. 2) Participating teachers will also share best practices at SAC (Subject Area Council) meetings and during PLC (Professional Learning Communities) time. 3) Participating teachers will provide training to other ELA teachers in the district at the 2018-2019 PUHSD teacher PD (Professional Development) days. The return of investment (ROI) will far exceed the initial costs. Research based instructional strategies participating teachers will gain from attendance at NCTE will allow students greater access to curriculum in all content areas and, in the end, increase student success and outcomes.
