Summary: The World Language Department from Paloma Valley High School has submitted a new course, Spanish Language Essentials. Spanish Language Essentials is a year-long course for students in grades 9-12 and who have an active Individual Education Plan (IEP). The course is designed to help the students with fulfilling the world language graduation requirement.

Spanish Language Essentials is an interactive course for high school students that is filled with diverse, multimedia language activities. Students will begin their introduction to Spanish by focusing on the four key areas of foreign language study: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Each unit consists of a new vocabulary theme and grammar concept, reading and listening comprehension activities, speaking and writing activities, multimedia cultural presentations, and interactive activities and practices which reinforce vocabulary and grammar.

Spanish Language Essentials was developed with a focus on conversational and cultural development with less grammar requirements. Students will develop basic conversational skills while acquiring basic vocabulary. Students will develop a cultural understanding and appreciation for Spanish speaking countries.

The primary textbook that will be used for Spanish Language Essentials is: DESCUBRE 1; 2nd Edition; c2017; Publisher: Vista Higher Learning; Author: Jose A. Blanco; ISBN: 978-1-68004-319-8.

The District's World Languages Subject Area Council (SAC) which consists of representatives from the three comprehensive high schools and one middle school have all approved this course. Spanish Language Essentials has been approved by the Director of Curriculum and Instruction and the Assistant Superintendent of Educational Services.

Recommendation: It is recommended that the Board of Trustees receive for review and consideration, as part of the first reading, the new Special Education course: Spanish Language Essentials.
