Summary: Melanie Woodard, teacher at Perris High School, is requesting approval for Perris High School Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) students to attend Southern California Colleges Tour, November 6-8, 2019. Perris High School AVID students have taken this trip in the past to Southern California campuses and benefited greatly.

The purpose of this trip is to continue to introduce different campuses to students. Traditionally, day trips are taken to colleges that are closer. However, staying overnight would allow for additional time to visit more campuses that would normally not fit into a shorter itinerary. The focus of the AVID program is to encourage students to want to attend college and this trip is a wonderful motivator for them to keep up their grades and stay in the program.

The list of colleges/universities on their itinerary is as follows: Cal Poly Pomona, University of Southern California, California State University Channel Islands, University of California Santa Barbara, Whittier College, and University of LaVerne. Ms. Woodard is in the process of adding more schools in order to give students the opportunity to experience various college campuses and programs that would be available to them if they continue academic excellence.

There will be fifty (50) students and five (5) chaperones, which include AVID teachers, staff members and/or college tutors. The students will each pay between $150 to $175 for their hotel and food, depending on the cost of the hotel room. Several students will be fundraising to help raise money for their trip. There is no charge for the campus tours and transportation will be provided via charter bus, which will be funded by the Local Control Accountability Program (LCAP) Supplemental and Concentration Funds supporting Goal #2.
Funding: The cost for this item is included in the 2019-20 operating budget funded through the Local Control Accountability Plan Supplemental and Concentration Funds and the Perris High School's Advancement Via Individual Determination Associated Student Body Account via student fundraising, not the General Fund.
Recommendation: It is recommended that the Board of Trustees approve the overnight field trip request for Perris High School's Advancement Via Individual Determination students to visit Southern California College campuses, November 6-8, 2019.
