Summary: Heritage High School (HHS) teacher, Kristin Clough, advisor for Heritage High School’s Key Club, has submitted an overnight field trip request for 10 HHS Key Club students to attend the 71st Annual Key Club California-Nevada-Hawaii District Convention in Anaheim, California, April 7-9, 2017.

The Key Club Conference is an annual community service project, and provides officer instruction in leadership, service, and competition. Students will also be recognized for their club's achievements, elect the 2017-2018 Executive Board, and meet thousands of other Key Club members.

Key Club International is the oldest, largest, and most successful non-profit student-led organization for high school students. They teach and spread their core values through community service, caring, character-building, inclusiveness, and leadership, which were adopted by their Key Club International Board in 2002. Members of Key Club, a part of the community-service based Kiwanis International Family, develop themselves into young leaders as they positively impact their schools and communities. The students are excited for this opportunity to attend the convention where they will be meeting and networking with other Key Club members from across the southwest region and to be able to not only learn from the speakers, but also from their peers who have acquired the skills and knowledge of membership and its responsibilities. The members will learn leadership skills and will also learn about the policies of Key Club International.

Today, Key Club exists on almost 5,000 high school campuses in 30 different countries, primarily in the United States and Canada. It has also grown internationally to the Caribbean nations, Central and South America, and most recently to Asia and Australia. With over 12 million hours of community service a year, Key Club International is an organization comprised of multi-state districts, divisions, and individual Key Clubs on high school campuses around the world. As members of the Kiwanis International family, Key Club members build themselves as they build their schools and communities. Many Key Club members receive college scholarships through the Kiwanis International family.

All students are housed in the same hotel, near the Anaheim Convention Center where the event will take place. Ms. Clough will serve as one of the chaperones. Transportation will be provided via one of the District vans. The cost per student/adult is approximately $400 per person. All expenses, registration fees, transportation and hotel costs will be paid through fundraising and the ASB Key Club account.
Funding: The cost for this item is included in the 2016-17 operating budget funded through the HHS’s ASB Key Club account and by student fund-raising.
Recommendation: It is recommended that the Board of Trustees approve the overnight field trip request for Heritage High School's Key Club Officers and members to attend the 71st Annual Key Club California-Nevada-Hawaii District Convention in Anaheim, California, April 7-9, 2017.
