Summary: The District's Educational Services Department has made recommendations for updates in our district-wide course catalog. When a course is discovered to be outdated or lack sufficient information, then a request is sent to the teacher(s) to update the course. At this time we are submitting the revised ceramic courses: Ceramics 1 and Advanced Ceramics. The courses have been updated to meet current Fine Art standards as well as to meet the A-G requirements for the College Board.

Ceramics 1 is an exploratory art study with the ultimate purpose of cultivating the creative mind and developing the skills and techniques of working with clay. Through this course, students will be introduced to the basics of ceramics and the fundamentals of three-dimensional arts. Students will be trained in ceramic methods such as hand building, glazing and throwing pottery. The course will encompass the history and terminology of the field and will strive to foster an appreciation of ceramic art. This course is written for grades nine through twelve.

Advanced Ceramics was previously offered under the name Ceramics 2. Students who enter into Advanced Ceramics will do so after completing Ceramics 1. Advanced Ceramics builds upon the stable foundation that was established and developed in Ceramics 1. Content-specific vocabulary and media concepts will be introduced to aid in student’s cognitive processing and provide a background for understanding the area of ceramic practice in greater detail. Advanced Ceramics introduces new, more challenging techniques, methods, concepts, and vocabulary to extend the students' understanding of the medium into levels of greater depth. This course is written for grades ten through twelve.

The Ceramics I course and Advanced Ceramics course have been approved by the Director of Curriculum and Instruction and the Assistant Superintendent of Educational Services.
