Summary: Each of the Perris Union High School District’s Friday Night Live (FNL) Club Advisors have submitted overnight field trip requests to attend the Active Youth Conference for fourteen (14) of their respective FNL Club students and two adult chaperones (per site).

The Active Youth Conference is sponsored by Riverside Friday Night Live and will take place at Camp Buckhorn in Idyllwild, California, on March 9-11, 2018 for middle school students and March 16-18, 2018 for high school students.

Fourteen students from Pinacate Middle School will be attending the session on March 9-11, 2018 which is geared specifically for middle school students. Student representatives from Perris High, Heritage High, Paloma Valley High, and Perris Lake High schools will attend the high school session on March 16-18, 2018. There will be two (2) chaperones from each site that will attend with the 14 students from their respective schools.

The skills taught at these camps include basic leadership and specific leadership skills that have to do with prevention education in the areas of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Other Drugs (ATOD). These leadership skills will enable students to facilitate activities and club events while under the direction of a staff advisor and a county liaison. The conference is considered to be a wonderful team-building opportunity with a “taking it home” component that involves very specific planning for implementing material presented at the conference.

The exercises and program examples that students have participated in over the last few years have helped to make Perris Union High School District's schools Safe and Drug-Free programs even stronger, giving the students expanded ideas of what young people are able to accomplish.

The cost for attending the conference is $110 per student and adult, which covers lodging and food. Bussing is being provided by the Riverside Friday Night Live group.
Funding: The cost for this item is included in the 2017-18 operating budget funded through District Title I Funds, respective school site’s Friday Night Live Club/Associated Student Body funds and Riverside County Office of Education Scholarships.
Recommendation: It is recommended that the Board of Trustees approve the overnight field trip requests for Perris Union High School District students to attend the Active Youth Conference at Camp Buckhorn in Idyllwild, California, March 9-11, 2018 and March 16-18, 2018.
